The possessions of Mallorca are much more than simple farms: they embody the history, traditions, and unique charm of the island. These rural estates bring together houses, farmland, mills, irrigation systems, and of course the people who live there and keep centuries-old customs alive. Among them, Raixa — nestled at the foot of the Serra de Tramuntana in Bunyola — stands out for having some of the most beautiful and romantic gardens in Mallorca. Originally an Islamic farm, Raixa became the property of the Count of Ampurias after the conquest of the island in 1229. Over the centuries, it passed through the hands of noble families, suffered fires and renovations, yet still preserves valuable traces of its medieval past.

Cardinal Despuig: patron and visionary

In the 18th century, Cardinal Antonio Despuig transformed Raixa into an artistic masterpiece. Passionate about art and culture, he created a museum of classical sculptures and entrusted the design of the gardens to Italian architect Tomás Abrines y Beltran, adding a refined Italian touch that defines the beauty of the estate. Even after his departure to Italy and his death in Tuscany, his heirs continued his work with great care.

The house and its outbuildings

The main house charms with its long gallery of ten arches, elegant balconies, and rooms that today host a small museum about the Serra de Tramuntana and life at Raixa. The courtyard reveals the traditional facilities of a possessió: an oil press, stables, storage rooms… According to tradition, Catalina Thomas, the patron saint of Valldemossa, lived here in service to the family and was beatified thanks to Cardinal Despuig.

Gardens: poetry and splendour

The gardens of Raixa are a journey through time and mythology. The Orange Garden, the vegetable garden, the vineyard, and the Loggia Garden create a bucolic atmosphere, while the Garden of Apollo, the Romantic Garden, and the Grand Safareig reflect the Cardinal’s artistic vision. Monumental staircases, statues, fountains, and a neo-Arab belvedere offer spectacular views, reaching as far as the Bay of Palma on a clear day.

Raixa on screen

Raixa has also served as a film location, hosting prestigious productions such as Bearn or The Doll’s House and Evil Under the Sun, a testament to its charm and unique atmosphere.
